Marine Propulsion module 3: Diesel Engines and Gas Turbines Characteristics

Aim
To understand the main characteristics of diesel engines and gas turbines. Physical principles are used to derive machinery characteristics. Also a basic overview will be given of thermodynamics processes within these engines. The module includes both lectures and practical exercises.

Subjects
Topics on diesel engines include:
• Working principles
• Indicator diagram
• Performance
• Power density
• Fuel and air consumption, emissions
• Pressure charging
• Operating envelope
• Thermodynamic analysis
• Construction and installation

Gas turbines are discussed with regard to:
• Working principles
• Ideal simple Brayton cycle
• Simple cycle with losses
• Regenerative cycle
• Cycle optimisation
• Other advanced cycles
• Operating envelope
• Installation on board

Target group and lecturers
This module is of interest to designers, engineers and sales engineers working with system integrators, engine transmission and propulsor manufacturers/representatives, electrical engineering firms, shipyards, navies, design offices and ship owners. HME organises the module ‘Diesel Engines and Gas Turbines: Characteristics’ in close cooperation with Delft University of Technology and Royal Netherlands Naval College. The trainers are the well known and respected Prof.ir. Douwe Stapersma and ir. Peter de Vos.
